I have about half the parts printed, and so far the print total is 388 hours of solid printing. Thats... well, a lot. 16.16 days to be precise.

Thats... a lot.

I said I have half the parts are printed, but that actually comprises most of the volume. What is left is primarily Wall-e's wheels, which have 70 parts just for the treads. However thats a small percentage of the volume, which is mostly in his body and head. Since filament print times are gated on volume, not number of parts, I expect the rest of Wall-E to be printed off in about a weeks time.

Still, thats a heck of a lot of printing, and, knock on wood, only one minor print failure so far. Thats a remarkable success rate for such things, considering I am using a stock hobby-level printer (Prusa Mini).

OK, enough talking... I gotta swap the empty filament spool for a full one and get back to printing.

Dave DeBaeremaekerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509244713175194147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28819137.post-56914082337299979602023-09-25T17:21:00.007-04:002023-09-25T17:21:55.231-04:00Achievement Unlocked
A bit of a milestone in my "make my own models" journey. When I say done, I am not kidding. I may be done printing by mid-October, tho in the projects defence, my Prusa Mini 3D filament printer is rather slow (tho there is an upcoming firmware update that may help speed it up).

I have the first part mostly completed and fresh off the printer, so here is a sneak preview. I don't really know why.

It could be that this was the photo project I was working on in between getting some cosplay props finished (Gandalf staff, Galadriels dagger), and then it was left half-finished when I went on 3 weeks vacation. So maybe it just became the project that felt abandoned, so when I got back to it I had already moved on.

Maybe it was due to this being one of the last statues from my Loot Studios subscription that caught my eye, and I went into this project not super excited to begin with. It was just the thing that was left. To be fair this model never did grab me. There is a reason why it's one of the last ones I printed. While I love a good wraith, and an empty robe always seems to pique my interest, the horse... its well, just fucking weird. For some reason the horse is like a zombie horse, with lots of decayed flesh and exposed bone and muscle, but given two of the legs are no longer attached, so it's also a magical horse for some reason? And whats up with the front leg pressing up against a rock like its kneeling, but sideways? It just feels like the whole thing is trying too hard.

It could just be my depression kicking in. I can feel that demon lurking in the background like the cowardly punk that it is.

Honestly I suspect its all three, but mostly the second one. I started this model because it was the next one on the site. I've done several before this, and this was just what was next, so I mindlessly just started printing it. Normally I go for the thing that grabs me the most, and this just... didn't.

I ended up finishing the paint job, just to get it to some sort of conclusion. But now? Now I think I am going to shelve this, and move on to something else.

Sometimes projects just don't work out. I think sometimes we as artists think of the work we do as being passion, and we have drive, and they feel like they are precious. Truth is, they are not precious. The act of doing the work is important, but the specific work we're doing... not so much. Art is precious, a single project is disposable.

So I am going to dispose of this one. Really, I'm just going to stick it on a shelf and move on to something else. If things change and it catches my eye in the future, then I'll make an image out of it. For now, it's time to move on to the next thing... hopefully something that gives me more passion to complete it than this thing has.

Dave DeBaeremaekerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509244713175194147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28819137.post-86966638952910527662023-05-26T08:23:00.002-04:002023-05-26T08:23:25.759-04:00Shop Notes: 2023-05-26 - Wizard Staff Progress.
Progress on my life-size Gandalf staff is being made. I have all the pieces 3D printed, and (mostly) assembled into a staff-like structure. Last night I added some additional texture with a Dremel cutting disc. then primed it using a spray can of Krylon's finest matte black.

This morning I assembled the staff head, including adding in a light I scavenged from an old Manfrotto LED light that I never use. Now it powers the magic. Not a bad upgrade for what is otherwise an unused piece of lighting kit.

I will let the glue dry while I am at work. I am painting up a couple elvish daggers, Galadriels dagger from Rings Of Power, to be used by a cosplayer/friend who has plans to be an elf warrior - super bad ass.

I myself, which should surprise no one who's seen my face, have a Gandalfian look about me. I have a Gandalf had and robe, but no staff. A wizard without his staff is a staffless wizard, and that's no fun. So to overcome that I have started to 3D print a wizard staff. This is the first time I've attempted to print something so large - over 6ft when completed, but it should go OK. It is 14 pieces, and 12 hours per piece, so it is going to take... quick math.... a while. Luckily I don't leave for this little adventure until June.

I am using my filament printer for this, which is a) cheaper, b) the better plastic for something thats going to get some wear and tear, and c) doesn't tie up my resin printer, which I need for my next diorama build.

I 3D printed the daggers on my resin printer, and primed them, well over a week ago. I used an air brush to lightly add some Vallejo Air Red and Light Red paints to the entire dragon. I sprayed it lightly so the brown I put on last time would still show through underneath, giving that multi-tone effect.

It seems to be going pretty not that bad. Most models at this stage of painting tend to look rather bad. The magic seems to come in the follow up steps where washes and dry brushing helps bring out the details and make them pop. The head, especially, needs some detail work. I've walked that trail several dozen times now. When I walk it in the morning the rising sun shines through the trees. I've taken a few janky videos of it, but nothing serious. I never walk the trail with my camera bag, so I just use my cell phone most of the time.

I love walking it in freezing temps - it hardens up the mud, and I love wearing a hoodie with the hood up when I walk, which means the temps have to be cold, else I overheat. Friday evening, just before bed, I was thinking about the next day and how I was looking forward to hitting up the trail: how it was going to be well below freezing, and mostly sunny, so the sunlight in the trees will be excellent. Suddenly this image here formed in my brain, fully baked, with the mist, light, location. Everything.

5 minutes later I had my camera bag packed, and waiting by the door so I wouldn't forget it the next day for my hike.

The above image is the result.Dave DeBaeremaekerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11509244713175194147noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28819137.post-84858157221491325392023-02-02T21:09:00.000-05:002023-02-02T21:09:00.862-05:00Shop Notes: 2023-02-02 - Base Coat
I spent the last couple days thinking of a color scheme for my dragon, since, being mythical, there isn't a set color pattern granted by nature. Annoying!

I've settled on something in a brown with red-ish highlights. Not sure of the entire look, but that will do as a starting point. Toward that end, this evening I air brushed a coat of brown - Vallejo's Dark Earth to be precise - all over the model.

Tomorrow after work I hope to travel to the next town over, in which contains several hobby stores, in which I shall purchase some paints for the finer details. For now, it's solid brown.
